A costume by any other name…

By Christina

Halloween was supposed to be easy this year. I found a firefighter-style rain coat for Zeeb at C*stco that easily doubles as a costume. And R~ decided to be Peter Pan, which means wearing the dress-up outfit she got for her birthday. (The girl has a real thing for Peter Pan… she doesn’t want to be no cheesy fairy… no sir, only the starring role for her!) Meanwhile K~ and A~ both decided they are too old to dress up and haven’t been invited to any parties so that meant I only had to figure out 2 costumes instead of 4. Or so I thought.

That was until I got notes from Zeeb’s teacher and R~’s teacher. Zeeb’s teacher declared October 31st “Mother Goose Day” – meaning the kids have to dress up as characters from Mother Goose nursery rhymes. R~’s teacher announced they are having a “Bug Ball” on the 31st and the children should dress up as insects. Which puts me back at 4 costumes. GAH.

I decided Zeeb will wear his knight costume he wore for Halloween last year and we’ll call him one of the “kings men” from Humpty Dumpty. (hmm, should probably read the rhyme to him a few times so he knows what he’s dressed as that day…) But R~’s bug costume is a bigger challenge. The question is, can I throw something together that looks good, is comfortable to wear on the bus and at school and doesn’t require sewing or really any crafting ability whatsoever? Because while this is cute

Blue Butterfly Costume

There is just no way on God’s green earth that it would only take me an “afternoon or evening” to make it.  And I’m guessing there would be copious amounts of swearing involved.

What are the chances, do you think, of finding a bug costume at Tarjay for 75% off, in R~’s size?? Sigh…

How about a lady bug or caterpillar? Lady bug is all black and then just get some red poster board to make the Wings w/ black dots on them. Or all green for the caterpillar, if you want put some small blue dots on too.

WHAT?!?! Your schools are changing the halloween day theme?!?!? That’s insanity! What happened to good old fashioned halloween parties?!?! Ugh. I feel for ya!

Those family fun costumes are awful – they NEVER work out!! They always end up WAY more work and totally dysfunctional and uncomfortable. We’ve done them many times. Run away!!! LOL It is easier to really truly sew than to do those “no sew” projects! What about just putting her in blue and calling her a blue caterpillar?!?! LOL

Who has ever heard of THEMES for Halloween. Good grief. But in the spirit of good fun and cooperating, how about a bumble bee.
A pair of yellow or black sweats with yellow or black felt strips. Add one of those headband thingies with balls at the top and your good to go. I’d forgo the wings, unless you’re really crafty. I haven’t figured out that part yet. ;>)

Don’t you love it when teachers get all creative! ;>

A lady bug or a bumblebee might be easy.

I have seen the wings sold at JoAnn Fabric before.

oh my thank goodness my kids’ teachers don’t have themes like that! I like the bumblebee idea!

Yikes! That would urk me especially because I pretty much have planned what my kids are going to be for Halloween at least the month before. I am a planner. I hate it too around Christmas when they ask for money to buy a group gift in leiu of buying a gift personally for the teacher a week before the holiday. HELLO!!! Gift shopping has been done already! In my house it’s probably already wrapped and sitting under the tree.

I agree about the bumble bee costume. Sounds the easiest.
