Guess what K, my 14 year old, wore to school today. Nevermind, you’ll never guess. My highschool “Class of 89″ sweatshirt. With the names of everyone in our class on the back. She’s into all things late 80′s / early 90′s dontcha’ know. And there is nothing cooler than an authentic Class of 89 sweatshirt. I knew I kept that thing for a reason. (Prior to this the reason for not donating it was: How weird would it be for a total stranger to wear MY sweatshirt with MY name on the back?! Also, I’m a sentimental pack rat.) Oh AND she’s wearing leggings. And my brother’s leather bomber jacket, also circa 1989. Suddenly I am regretting not keeping ALL of my highschool clothes. I bet she’d love my awesome pink denim miniskirt with the grey swirly flowers on it.

Today’s outfit was a giant step up from yesterday’s. Which was one of my old nightshirts (with a big hole in the armpit and slits going up the sides) and a pair of black tights. I swear. I really don’t know what came over her, usually she wears so many layers she’d win the Most Modest Teen Ever award. And she was SO mad at Hubby because he refused to let her go to school like that. And then she missed her bus and Hubby had to drive her to school. Ah the teen years. They make the terrible twos look like a walk in the park.

There is a good side to having a 14 year old daughter though. I get to revisit all my favorite 80′s movies. This past weekend I decided K was ready to see The Breakfast Club. She’d had a really rough week at school and was feeling like no one liked her and no one understood her – I ask you, is there any better film for that than The Breakfast Club? It is rated R though, so I was a little cautious. Mostly it was fine – lots of swearing, but she hears that every day at school. But I forgot how much the stoner guy goads the popular girl with really crass sexual references. I tried to distract K and talk over those parts. K LOVED the movie. Said it was the best film she’s ever seen and she wants to watch it again. I’m so proud. I think I’ll show her Pretty In Pink next.

Speaking of flashbacks, I think I could spend all day watching the clips from the Today Show’s TV’s Greatest Families series. I swear I watched almost every single show they profiled. The Partridge Family, Eight is Enough, One Day at a Time, 227, The Waltons, The Cosby Show… Clearly I watched a LOT of TV growing up. But TV was better back then. I can’t believe The Partridge Family went off the air in 1974. How is it that I remember that show so clearly? I’m the youngest of four, so I guess my siblings really liked it. We used to play “Partridge Family” all. the. time. I was always the youngest sister, the one with no plotlines of her own and just a tamborine or a triangle to play in the band. But I didn’t mind. It was a little depressing though, to see the actress all grown up and hear what she’s doing now. (Go watch the clip. Nevermind, I’m too impatient. **spoiler alert** She’s a manager at Office Max. Office Max! Seriously? Talk about peaking young!)

So I have it on very good authority that Spring is indeed on it’s way. Zeeb announced it in the car after school today. Also last night on the news they said some experty guy made an announcement about when the cherry trees will bloom in DC. (March 31st – April 11th) There was a press conference and clapping and everything. DC cracks me up sometimes.

I just barely made it to the bus stop in time this afternoon – the bus arrived just as I pulled up. It was five minutes early. Which is bad considering they won’t drop the kids if no one is there to meet them. I don’t think they should be allowed to be so early. Also I think I’d better adjust my clocks so I never cut it that close again.

More news from Rhonda and Bykota House this week…
We were also blessed today to receive a ten year old girl whose elderly grandparents were no longer able to care for her. They were worried what would become of her at their death. She has already lost both parents. The family lived in a far away province and her first language isn’t Khmer but Chinese.
I think this brings the number up to 21 kids at Bykota House now. I’m sure they’d appreciate your prayers for this little girl and all the other kids as they adjust.
Gotta run … R is going to a playdate and dinner at our neighbor’s house… I think this is a first! (The dinner part, I mean.) Hope you all have a great weekend.
More Quick Takes Here.

I am class of ’89 too! I didn’t save any of my clothes but I have boys so it’s all good. I think I had that pink skirt. And LOL…I just let my boys watch “The Breakfast Club” last weekend! They loved it. They have seen lots of 80′s movies, but Ferris is their favorite.
In Japan they do that too (broadcast when the cherry trees will bloom) and then lots of people get married under them.

Eighties nostalgia! I love it!!!
I, too, wish my mom had kept all her old clothes. We still watch 80s movies together, and she rolls her eyes when I tell her I wish I could get away with really big hair in this decade.

I’ve never cut it that close with my son’s bus, but sometimes I have been running late and left the house a couple minutes later than usual and had to rush over. I’ve wondered what the bus driver would do if I wasn’t there–my son is in junior kindergarten and it’s a bit of a hike from the bus stop to our house.

By the way, I also visited the “TV’s Greatest Families” link and watched a couple of the interviews. Reruns of The Partridge Family were available after school when I was young, so I could relate, too!
It’s cool to be retro, aye?
